Growing up back in the 70’s and 80’s the Jaycees had a pumpkin carving contest that was held annually at the Maple Lane Mall in La Porte. I can remember the grand prize being a new bicycle from Mr. Schoof’s Bike Shop here in town. My friends and family would gather weeks before hand and make plans as to what we were going to carve our pumpkins into. After the carving and cleaning out of the slime, my mom would wash and bake the pumpkin seeds for us to eat.
Dressing up was a lot of fun too. From a Werewolf to a Zombie each year with help from mom and some thrift store clothes, makeup and spirit gum, I’d be transformed into a ghoul. After we outgrew and were too cool for “beggars’ night” my best friend and I would turn his parents place into an extreme haunted yard. We would spend each night after school and all the weekends from October 1st until Halloween, plotting and constructing our spooky scenes. Many of you may remember the Belden St. Haunted Yard.
Others I know travel to see the Fall Foliage with all the wonderful Autumn colors. Some people have hay rides and bon fires. While we all may have our own Fall Family Traditions with pumpkin carving, costumes, candy, I’m grateful for the fond memories I have of Fall.
